All third-party data below is labelled with its source and verification date. Measurement definitions differ between institutions, so figures should be read as ranges rather than absolute values. We also mark which statements are our own field observations and which are third-party research — the two must not be conflated.
Overseas B2B buyers open ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews and ask directly: "which Chinese outdoor furniture suppliers are worth working with" or "recommend a few reliable battery storage factories". AI returns a shortlist. That shortlist is no longer ten blue links but a paragraph of integrated recommendation text.
What decides whether you appear in that list is no longer only SEO ranking, but GEO — Generative Engine Optimization.
1. The procurement chain has changed: from "searching pages" to "asking AI"
Start with a set of verifiable figures:
| Observation | Figure | Source | Verified |
|---|---|---|---|
| B2B professionals using AI tools at work | 84% (69% daily) | Semrush survey of 622 US B2B professionals | 2026-10-07 |
| Buyers who regularly research suppliers with AI | 66% (plus 29% occasionally) | Semrush, same survey | 2026-10-07 |
| Buyers saying AI already influenced their supplier shortlist | 92% (45% say significantly) | Semrush, same survey | 2026-10-07 |
| Share of the buying process using generative AI | 94% (89% a year earlier) | Forrester State of Business Buying 2026, ~18,000 buyers | 2026-10-07 |
| Buyers who trust AI-generated supplier recommendations | 88% | B2B Buyer Loyalty Index 2026 | 2026-10-07 |
| Google AI Overviews appearance rate across all searches | ~48–50% (6.49% in Jan 2025) | BrightEdge commercial tracking (2026-02) plus Google's own ~50% | 2026-10-07 |
| Organic click rate on AI Overview queries | 1.76% → 0.61% (2024-06 to 2025-09, a 65% drop) | Seer Interactive, 14-month study, 53 brands, 5.47M queries | 2026-10-07 |
These figures point to two fundamental changes:
First, the metric moves from "rank" to "being cited". In the SEO era you competed on page position and click-through. In the GEO era you compete on whether your brand's information can be lifted directly into the answer AI gives a buyer. Seer Interactive quantified the cost: queries without an AI Overview earned 33,500 clicks per million impressions, cited brands earned 20,743, and brands not cited earned 9,445 — under a third of the cited figure.
Second, the audience becomes "human plus AI". Content must be legible and trustworthy to the overseas buyer, and simultaneously parseable and extractable by AI crawlers.
One premise is often misunderstood: ChatGPT and Perplexity do not read Google's index. ChatGPT's retrieval largely depends on Bing data. Multi-platform presence is the only correct approach.
2. Who does AI actually cite? Read the source distribution first
This is the section most easily talked past by marketing copy. Below is Profound's analysis of the top 10 domains cited by mainstream AI search, plus Ahrefs' March 2026 analysis of 863,000 keywords and 4 million AI Overview citations:
| Source | Share of top 10 AI Overview citations | Character |
|---|---|---|
| 21.0% | Conversational, real experience, includes negative views | |
| YouTube | 18.8% | Tutorials and demos, transcripts indexable |
| Quora | 14.3% | Structured Q&A |
| 13.0% | Professional identity and practitioner content | |
| Wikipedia | 5.7% | Encyclopedic authoritative knowledge source |
| ChatGPT preference | Wikipedia is 7.8% of all its citations, the largest single source | Authoritative knowledge base tendency |
| Perplexity preference | Reddit is 46.7% of its top 10 citation share | Community discussion tendency |
Profound (measurement window 2024-08 to 2025-06), Ahrefs Brand Radar (2026-03). Verified 2026-10-07. Third-party research, not our own measurement.
Three things can be read from this table:
Reddit's citation share (21%) exceeds YouTube's (18.8%) — yet most Chinese export content focuses only on YouTube and Facebook. That is a strategic gap.
ChatGPT and Perplexity have opposite source preferences. ChatGPT leans hardest on Wikipedia; Perplexity leans hardest on Reddit. Funding both with one budget spreads it thin.
YouTube's citations come from "sub-question coverage" rather than ranking. Ahrefs found that 18.2% of citations earned by pages ranking outside Google's top 100 came from YouTube. A video does not need to top a "best payment API list" — it only needs to be the best answer to a sub-question such as "how to integrate Stripe webhooks".
A counter-intuitive criterion: information gain
Two criteria govern how models select what to cite. The first is information gain:
The second is typicality — the model needs to detect whether a real, credible industry entity stands behind the content.
Both criteria dictate what you should write: reorganising existing knowledge is useless. You must supply what the model cannot generate from nothing — your factory's real numbers, your own measurements, the details of your customer cases.
3. The three traps export businesses fall into with overseas GEO
The following come from our observations delivering for export clients, and are the usual root cause of "I published content but AI still doesn't mention me".
Trap one: publishing only on your own site, with no high-authority off-site corroboration
Many businesses think translating the product page and adding keywords is enough. The source distribution above shows your own website is not the primary source in most AI source systems.
Consistency matters even more. If your site says "20-year factory", your YouTube channel says "since 2010" and your Facebook page says "founded 2005", AI lowers its confidence in the whole set when cross-checking. One company name, one founding date, one contact route is the precondition for trust.
Trap two: publishing from domestic IPs or shared proxies, getting throttled or banned
YouTube and Facebook apply strict risk control to account login IPs. Frequently changing IPs, using heavily shared data-centre IPs, or an IP location that contradicts the account's stated market gets flagged as anomalous — the result is throttling with content kept out of public recommendation, or outright bans that extend to linked accounts.
Many export teams spend heavy effort producing English video and posts that never enter the platform's public index because the publishing environment was not clean. AI naturally cannot fetch them.
Trap three: the "GEO site" is just a brochure with no crawler-facing structure
Some platforms treat a brand's own website as a high-weight source — provided it can be read smoothly. Many export sites are template-built: no Schema structured data, robots.txt blocking crawlers outright, and no sitemap ever submitted to a webmaster platform. The storefront is open but the door is locked.
⚠️ The most common configuration error: many site owners only allow GPTBot in robots.txt and assume that is enough. GPTBot is the model training crawler, which is a different thing from being cited in AI search. What determines whether you enter the AI search index is a different set: OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended. Allowing only GPTBot puts your data into training while leaving you out of search results.
Similarly, Google does not participate in the IndexNow protocol, so the Google side still requires sitemap submission through Search Console, while Bing Webmaster Tools is one of the main ingestion paths for ChatGPT retrieval.
4. Three capabilities that decide whether overseas GEO actually runs
The overseas GEO plan is designed around a three-step loop — make content, publish it, measure it. Three capabilities separate it from ordinary agency work.
Capability one: overseas static IP, so the account "lives like a real local user"
Many export teams do not fail on willingness but on "published, then banned" or "posted, then throttled". The problem is the network environment, not the content.
An overseas static IP — especially a native ISP static IP — is assigned directly by a major local operator in the target market and never changes. Platforms read it as "a real user living locally and stably". Shared proxies, data-centre IPs and dynamic residential IPs are used by many accounts simultaneously and carry a poor history, so they sit in high-risk ranges by default.
⚠️ A necessary caveat: a static IP's reputation is shared by everyone using it. If an account on the same address violated platform rules before, later users inherit the effect. A static IP should therefore be dedicated to a single business purpose, and a new address should run at small scale first to confirm stability before scaling up. This is a constraint that sits outside the price.
Concretely, overseas static IP solves three problems in GEO:
- Account survival — core YouTube channels and Facebook pages bind to a fixed static IP for login, publishing and operations, avoiding repeated IP jumps that trigger anomalous-login alarms.
- Content entering the public index — only when account health is good, content is publicly visible and unthrottled can retrieval systems that depend on Bing indexing, Perplexity's live web retrieval, and Meta AI reading public Facebook content actually fetch you.
- Local distribution weighting — YouTube and Facebook content distribution has some local-first logic keyed to account registration region and habitual login IP region, so publishing from a target-market static IP gives an initial exposure advantage in that region.
Capability two: automated YouTube and Facebook publishing, putting content where AI actually reads
GEO is not finished when the article is written. Content must reach the platforms AI engines genuinely fetch.
Our overseas distribution covers 14 platforms, of which Reddit, YouTube and Facebook carry the most weight.
- Reddit (largest citation source at 21.0% of Google's AI Overview top 10) — discussion format and real experience are the content form models prefer. Reddit enforces strict self-promotion rules, so discussion is done through genuine human accounts under the client's ownership, with links and engagement data preserved.
- YouTube (18.8%) — automated publishing through the official OAuth channel covers upload, title, description, tags and privacy settings. Ahrefs found 18.2% of citations earned by pages outside the top 100 came from YouTube, meaning a video can be cited without reaching a natural-ranking list, provided it answers a specific sub-question.
- Facebook posts — written to Meta AI's reading habits: answer in the first sentence, question-and-answer structure, natural search terms embedded, and the post kept publicly visible.
Beyond these three, coverage includes LinkedIn, dev.to and Quora, forming a layered source network of owned site plus video platform, social platform, technical community and Q&A community.
Capability three: a GEO site that gives AI a readable "brand identity card"
Your own site is a credible identity in the AI's eyes — but only if it was built for AI reading rather than as a human-facing brochure.
The GEO site is designed from the start around AI crawler logic and does four things:
- Schema structured data —
Organization,Product,FAQPage,ArticleandBreadcrumbListacross the site, supplied as JSON-LD so fields are machine-readable. - Classified permission for two crawler types — explicit fetch permission declared separately for training crawlers (
GPTBot) and search-index crawlers (OAI-SearchBot,ClaudeBot,PerplexityBot,Google-Extended). Allowing only the former is a common and ineffective configuration. - Webmaster platform submission — active submission to Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Search Console.
- No caching on crawler-facing files — if robots.txt and the sitemap are CDN-cached, crawlers keep reading the old version after a source-side fix, so the fix never takes effect. This is a high-frequency cause of "I changed it and nothing happened".
5. The full path: from a CNY 1 measurement to a quarterly loop
Step 1: a CNY 1 competitive and opportunity measurement
Before committing budget, run one measurement of brand visibility across overseas AI engines. The report contains three parts:
- Your position — current recognition rate and recommendation rank in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews answers;
- The competitors' words — which AI recommendation slots and buyer question scenarios competitors already occupy;
- The open opportunity — question scenarios not yet covered by competitors that you could claim first.
⚠️ One methodology note: when computing mention rate, samples where the brand name appears directly in the question must be excluded, otherwise the brand term itself biases the prompt and inflates the number. Figures published with different measurement definitions cannot be compared side by side.
Step 2: quarterly delivery on the overseas GEO plan
Run as three steps — make content, publish it, check weekly:
- Make content — 12 bilingual Chinese-English GEO articles per month (about 1,500 words each), AI-generated video, and posts written to Meta AI's pattern;
- Publish — distribution across 14 overseas platforms, overseas static IP protecting account health, genuine human participation on Reddit and Quora;
- Check — indexing infrastructure built out, plus a monthly all-engine monitoring report giving per-engine mention rate, citation rate, competitor benchmarking and next month's recommended actions.
Step 3: the GEO site, built alongside or started first
A durable credible identity for the brand in the AI world, forming a complete loop of off-site corroboration plus on-site foundation.

7. What we do not promise
Overseas GEO has real upside, but it also has clear limits. We do not promise:
- A specific ranking or citation position. The answer-generation process of generative engines is invisible to any service provider, so absolute promises about a specific answer slot have no technical basis.
- A specific survival-rate uplift from static IP. Such outcomes depend heavily on account history and platform policy.
- llms.txt as an outcome. See section 4.
- A specific time to effect. Engines differ in indexing and update cycles; the working rhythm is weekly tracking with a one-month evaluation window.
What we do commit to is the verifiable part: environment authenticity (one account per IP, fixed exit geography), deliverable completeness (configuration changes plus dated re-test records), and source labelling for third-party research data.
